Things to do whilst in lockdown/ isolation

In the past few months things have gotten a little crazy! The whole world has been "shut down" because of a virus spreading globally. Something that no one would ever believe would happen. Or at least believe in real life that something like this would happen. I am pretty sure there are some movies out there that are similar to real life events right now!

In Australia we have been put in to "self isolation" where most people have been made to stay at home. (Except essential workers which poor MJL falls into!) Most people are just trying to get by. I have come up with a small list of things to try whilst you are home in isolation.

Things to do:

1. Yoga videos from YouTube.

This is something I used to do regularly and have gotten out of practise with. But there are some amazing youtube channels out there that are easily to follow. My recommendation is Yoga with Adriene. She is amazing! Stretching and moving your body is a great way to relieve tension. Meditation is always good to accompany yoga. I use the Let's meditate app which is a great guided meditation.

2. Draw.

I love to draw and paint. For those who aren't confident with their drawing abilities, there are also youtube videos out there for that! Or colouring in books which are great for mindfulness.

3. Read a book.

What a great time to get through the never-ending reading list. So far I am 50% through a book I started reading last week by only reading a couple of chapters a night/ day.

I signed up to Amazon Kindle Unlimited and have downloaded a few interesting books already. A great buy!

4. Start a new hobby.

Whether it be crocheting, making jewellery, painting models... why not take this time to start something new.

5. Bake something.

Turning to the kitchen is always fun. Especially with kids involved. Why not show them how to bake a cake, or muffins ....or cookies! Oh now I am getting hungry!! Baking is a great thing to do as when you are finished you feel accomplished.

6. Play a board game or card game.

See previous posts on some fun games to play. But the amount of board games out there.... Go wild! Manopoly is always a family favourite, or my favourite is Scrabble. Playing a board game, especially with kids allows them to learn skills that they don't get through watching movies or playing on the computer. Also they are so much fun!

7. Sort out the cupboards.

Sitting around the house is a great time to get those jobs done that you have been putting off. Linen closet overflowing? Why not take this time to give it a good sort. Organising is great for the mind!

There are some amazing people on instagram for organising. Check out @justanothermummyblog for some great organisation tips!

8. Do some art and craft

The list of art and craft on Pinterest or Youtube is endless. These lanterns were a super easy task to achieve, and with little materials needed. Kids love creating things!

Some of things we have tried are: lanterns, drawing from Youtube, Ninja puppets, colouring in pages (printed) making our own coat of arms.... So many ideas!

9. Watch a movie

Not something I usually condone, but why not watch a fun movie. Make it in to a movie night! Popcorn and all! We have Netflix which is great for choice.

10. Listen to some podcasts

There are so many wonderful podcasts out there. Spotify is my go to! Find a great podcast and settle in on the couch and listen away! Or listen while you clean, or chase after the kids....

11. Go for a walk

My personal favourite. Because it makes you feel like you aren't closed in. Going for a walk moves your body and gives you the physical exercise you need. But it also clears your mind. Like running? Go for a run. Like going for a leisurely stroll? Take it a little slower. Just remember the distancing rules!

12. Make a gratitude journal.

In times that are tough, its hard to remember the wonderful and amazing things in our lives. Why not make a gratitude journal to begin to explore all those amazing things in our lives? There are some great prompts out there for creating gratitude journals, but easy way to start- list 3 things that youre grateful for each day. You will start to realise just how many amazing things are in your life. Most of all.... Being healthy!

Keeping yourself busy and moving is the key to keeping yourself from going completely crazy. At the moment there isn't any right way to feel. But keeping our mental and physical health in check will mean that we will be able to get through this and see a lighter side at the end of it all!
