Motherhood: The ups and downs

Being a mumma is the best job in the world. But it is also the hardest job around! There are so many ups and downs and sometimes it is super easy to get caught up in it all.

As a new mummy you will feel raw, sensitive and even emotional. Everything will seem different and overwelming. When I had my daughter I was so overwhelmed by it all. The constant screaming throughout the night and the restless days left me feeling worthless and helpless. But there are some ways to keep yourself from getting caught up in it all and feeling overwhelmed.

The bad days

There are going to be the bad days. Trust me. But use these very simple steps to help keep yourself in order:

  1. Use your village

  2. Get out of the house

  3. Rest, Rest, Rest!

  4. Talk about it!

I will discuss each of these in more detail below. Each are super simple, but can be really helpful to make it through those days where things just aren't working.

1. Use your village

They say it takes a village to raise a child, and they are very much correct. The people around you, supporting you are your village. On those bad days, use them. Ask for some help. Visit family and let them help hold bub. You are not alone as a mum!

2. Get out of the house

It is super easy to get caught up in the mess of being a parent especially when sitting around the house all the time. On those bad days, get out of the house. Go for a walk. Go to the shops. Go get a coffee. Sit outside for awhile. Those moments out of the house will help clear your mind, but also may settle bub down too!

3. Rest, Rest, Rest!

Those bad days will be tiring. You will feel exhausted super quick. If need be, have a day snooze. Lay down for awhile. Watch a movie. Make sure to take those extra minutes to rest. On those bad days the extra rest will help.

4. Talk about it!

Discussing the bad days sometimes can be daunting. But talk about it with others. Ring a girlfriend up and tell them what has been happening. Ring another mama and ask for some advice. By talking about it it brings it into the world. You are not alone!

The good days

When looking at the bad days, it sometimes helps to focus on the good days, or even just the positive things that have happened.

Some simple positives could be:

  • Baby slept for longer

  • Baby had a good feed

  • You got up and dressed

  • You did your hair

  • Baby smiled at you

  • You were able to get through a meal without baby screaming

  • Or my personal favourite: Baby didn't scream in the car! (See above)

By focusing on the simple positives, it will make those good days seem even better. By doing so, trust me, you will feel a lot more confident about being a mummy!

Whether you are a mummy, or going to be a mummy, I don't want this post to scare you. But I wanted it to show that there are going to be ups and downs in motherhood. The key to it all is to make sure you don't get overwhelmed by it all.

For the mamas out there: What would you say is the biggest positive you have had today?
